Bollywood's beloved on-screen couple, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, will soon be honoured with a bronze statue in London for their classic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). This will be the first Indian movie to receive such recognition at London’s famous Scenes in the Square movie trail in Leicester Square.
SRK-Kajol’s Iconic DDLJ Scene Gets a Spot in Leicester Square
The news comes from Yash Raj Films, who shared that the Heart of London Business Alliance is adding the statue to celebrate the 30th anniversary of DDLJ, one of India’s biggest and most loved films. Directed by Aditya Chopra, the 1995 romantic comedy has stood the test of time and continues to charm audiences even today.
The statue will feature Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in one of DDLJ’s most iconic poses. It is expected to be unveiled this spring and will mark a special moment for both Bollywood fans and the five million-strong British South Asian community.
Interestingly, the location has a direct connection to the movie. Leicester Square actually appeared in DDLJ, in the scene where Raj (played by Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (played by Kajol) unknowingly cross paths for the first time during their European vacation. In that scene, Raj stands near the Vue Cinema while Simran walks past the Odeon Leicester Square.
The statue will be placed right outside the Odeon Cinema on the eastern terrace, exactly where this memorable moment was filmed. With this, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol will be joining an elite group of international cinema legends who already have statues in the area.
Scenes in the Square currently features ten other iconic film characters, including Harry Potter, Mr Bean, Laurel & Hardy, Bugs Bunny, Gene Kelly (Singin' in the Rain), Mary Poppins, Paddington, and superheroes like Batman and Wonder Woman.
