Squid Game Season Two Will Introduce Scary Animatronic Doll's Boyfriend?

Social media user joked that the Squid Game doll has a “more exciting love life than me”.

Netflix’s Squid Game was confirmed for season 2 and a teaser trailer was released on June 13. The writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed some details about the upcoming season, including information about the Squid Game doll. He revealed that Cheol-su, the boyfriend of the animatronic doll Young-hee would be introduced.

The animatronic doll Young-hee was featured in the first episode, as the monitor for the game “Red Light, Green Light”. Actor Jung Ho-yeon spoke about Young-hee and Cheol-su in an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”. She revealed that there were characters from old South Korean textbooks. “When we were at school, there were characters. One is a boy and one is a girl. The boy’s name was Cheol-su and the girl’s name was Young-hee.”

Young-hee, popularly known as the Squid Game doll grew in popularity after the show's release. In the Philippines, a replica of the Squid Game doll was displayed at a mall entrance and monitored the jaywalkers crossing the nearby street. Another doll replica was installed in Olympic Park, Seoul. In the Netherlands, Netflix hosted a Squid Game where people could play the game “Red Light, Green Light” and a replica of the doll was exhibited.

Twitter users reacted to the revelation regarding Young-hee’s boyfriend Cheol-su with jokes about their single life.

A user tweeted that they “can’t accept that fact that this doll has a boyfriend” and that they did not. The user joked that they would not watch season 2. The user had previously expressed shock that the animatronic doll had a boyfriend and stated that they didn’t even know that Young-hee was the doll’s name.

Another user joked that the Squid Game doll has a “more exciting love life than me”.

Writer and director Hwang also mentioned that Gi-hun, the protagonist in the first season played by Lee Jung-jae, would return in the second season. Gi-hun is not the only returning character, as the antagonist Front Man would also be returning. Hwang mentioned that Gong Yoo’s mysterious character that lured people into playing the Squid Game could also return.

Squid Game was released worldwide on 17 September 2021 and became the most-watched series on Netflix. The survival drama show was the top viewed program in 94 countries and within 28 days amassed 1.65 billion viewership hours.
