Sexist Bollywood fathers: The film industry has given us enough movies which prove the importance of a father's role in the life of a daughter. Movies like Thappad, Piku, Gunjan Saxena are among those that depict a heart-warming relationship between a father and a daughter. But at the same time, Bollywood has shown us a dark picture of fatherhood through regressive characters. Here are the most annoying fathers of Bollywood.
Here are 5 most sexist Bollywood fathers
1. Rahul (Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai)
Rahul and Anjali are best friends in college. But he never falls in love with her because she is "not like other girls". When they meet after years with the aid of his 8-year-old daughter, she is all set to marry Aman. But now, she has abandoned her "tomboy" appearance and is quite "lady like". It is her transformation that makes him fall in love with her and they unite on the day of her wedding with Aman. If that does not make Rahul a sexist dad, I don't know what will.
2. Baldev (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge)
DDLJ remains with us after all these years but we never realised how it took Simran's father an entire movie to realise that he must let her daughter choose her own partner. Baldev initially wants Simran to marry Kuljeet because of a promise he made to his friend Ajit 20 years ago. Point to be noted, Simran and Kuljeet have not even met each other but it is more important for Baldev to keep his "promise" than to see his daughter happy.
His sexism doesn't end here. He is initially reluctant to send Simran on a trip with her friends and on learning that she is in love with Raj, decides to move to India. Till the very end, he keeps preventing her from uniting with Raj. Is it fair to ignore his ill treatment towards his daughter just because he finally let go off her with "Ja Simran Ja, Jee Le Apni Zindagi"?
3. Shyam Sundar Shukla (Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana)
Aarti is a bright student with aspirations. She has no plans of becoming a homemaker but her father Shyam Sundar Shukla is worried about nothing but her marriage. He doesn't listen to her when she refuges to get married early. Because of the conservative family she comes from, she has no option other than fleeing from her &t=92s">wedding ceremony when she comes to know that she has cleared the PCS exam. Had her father listened to her earlier, she wouldn't have had to take the drastic step.
4. V.K. Sehgal (Bewakoofiyan)
V.K. Sehgal is proud of Mayera's success but wants a son-in-law who is "well settled" and earns more than his daughter. He rejects Mohit just because he is not financially so well off as Mayera. Things worsen when he loses his job. Bewakoofiyan is a movie that shows no matter how independent and successful women are, brown parents will continue to seek "established" grooms with a good bank balance for them. Why can't the society look at women as individuals capable of managing their own expenses?
5. Ambarnath (Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya)
Ambarnath forces his elder son Aloknath to marry Urmila, the girl he is not in love with. Despite being intelligent and more professionally trained than Alok, she is not allowed to work. He also asks his younger son Badrinath to find Vaidehi, (his fiancé who fled from her wedding to pursue her career) so that she could be "punished". Crossing all limits of discrimination, he arranged a prayer ceremony for pregnant Urmila so that she could give birth to a son. When are we doing away with such sexist Bollywood fathers?
