Actor Priyanka Chopra visited Lucknow to learn more about the initiatives UNICEF and its partners are pursuing to eliminate violence and discrimination against women and girls in Uttar Pradesh. The star explained the reason behind her trip and shared pictures of herself interacting with local women and kids on social media.

There are rumours that prior to her visit to the state, posters with the message "You're not welcome in the city of Nawabs" were put up. These boycott posters were put up in Gomtinagar.

The protesters were reportedly against her show Quantico, which allegedly portrays members of the Hindu community as terrorists, according to reports on India Today. Even though the cause of the protest is still unknown and is currently the subject of a police investigation. It's thought that the protesters felt the show damaged India's reputation.

The star stated during her trip to the state, "I'm curious to know how things have changed for women and kids in Uttar Pradesh. I want to witness firsthand the larger-scale transformation that technology and innovation are bringing about. Girls are most negatively impacted by gender inequality in India, which leads to unequal opportunities."

The actor also discussed the need for solutions to put an end to discrimination and violence against girls in Uttar Pradesh. "We are visiting various UNICEF partners to see the work that is being done to end violence and discrimination against girls. I will hear about the challenges they face in daily life and see the solutions on hand, because what is needed are solutions at scale. As I have said often enough, women and girls are the key to building better futures, not just for themselves but for their communities," she said in the video.

Priyanka Chopra was in Mumbai to attend to her work commitments prior to her trip to Lucknow. She is anticipated to return soon to start shooting her upcoming film, Jee Le Zaraa, in which she will co-star with Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif.
