She is known for creating and starring in the comedy series Fleabag, along with being the showrunner, executive producer and head writer for the first season of Killing Eve. The newly created role of President is an honorary one, and Waller-Bridge will act as an advocate for the Fringe Society. It is a charity that exists to support everyone who wishes to participate in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival. It was established in 1947 and takes place annually in August. It is an open access performing arts festival, meaning there is no selection committee and anyone may participate. It is supported by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, offers advice and support to performers, and sells tickets to events.

“The Edinburgh Fringe has staged an annual cultural revolution for decades. It’s where thousands of writers, comedians, performers and artists cut their teeth and put their most raw work out into the world. It relies on its audiences and it relies on its artists,” says Waller-Bridge.

Shona McCarthy, chief executive of Festival Fringe Society said that, “We’re so delighted to have Phoebe come on board as our first ever president. Her work, her legacy and her passion for the Fringe is truly inspiring, and her journey since bringing Fleabag to the Fringe in 2013 has been nothing short of remarkable.”
