The series follows the story of inspector Hathiram Chowdhary who gets assigned a high-profile case and gets caught into the dark underworld while investigating it. Paatal Lok series is loosely based on Tarun Tejpal's novel The Story of My Assassins. The series is directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy. It is shot at 110 real locations and is the first web series to be shot at Chitrakoot. The show marked the debut of actor Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Ssharma's production company in the digital arena. The crime-thriller premiered on Amazon Prime Video on May 15, 2020.

The series received critical acclaim as well as many accolades and awards for the brilliant performances of the actors along with its direction and story and was also widely loved by the audience. It won five Filmfare OTT awards including Best Actor, Best Series, Best Original Story, Best Screenplay and Best Direction. OTT platform Amazon Prime Video recently confirmed the return of the series with its second season as it announced 41 new titles to be joining the platform soon.

It is expected that the plot for Paatal Lok Season 2 will revolve around a new murder mystery. However, the plot for season 2 has not been officially confirmed yet.

Paatal Lok cast includes Jaideep Alhawat, Ishwak Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, Swastika Mukherjee, Anindita Bose, Chum Darang, Neeraj Kabi, Gul Panag and others. Most of the main cast is expected to return in Paatal Lok new season. Actor Jaideep Alhawat told BollywoodLife in an interview that he will be reprising his role in the next season. He mentioned, "I'll be very happy to return to Pataal Lok. It was one of the first shows that released during the first lockdown, people loved it and it had set the benchmark for the craze that people developed for OTT content since then."
