The 2009 horror film Orphan followed the story of Esther, a nine-year-old girl adopted by the Colemans after their third child is stillborn. However, soon enough Esther starts displaying bizarre violent behaviours. In the twisted ending of Orphan, it is revealed that Esther is actually a 33-year-old woman named Leena Klammer who has a hormonal disorder which makes her look like a child and she murders families who adopt her. The film franchise is returning to the big screens with its prequel Orphan: First Kill.

Actor Isabelle Furhman, who played Esther, was 12 years old when Orphan came out. The actor, now 25, will be reprising her role along with Kennedy Irwin who will play as her body double. Orphan: First Kill will follow the story of Leena Klammer/Esther's first victims. She impersonates the missing daughter of the couple Katie and Richard, Esther Mauerova.

Along with Furhmann, the film also stars Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland, Morgan Easton-Fitzgerald and Matthew Finlan among others. Orphan: First Kill ">trailer opens with Katie (Julia Stiles) and Richard (Rossif Sutherland) who meet up with a detective who claims to have retraced their missing daughter Esther (Isabelle Furhman). As the trailer moves forward, Katie becomes suspicious of her daughter's strange behaviour and it is later revealed that she is not the real Esther. The film is touted to provide viewers with a back story for Leena and what actually made her into a killer.

The official synopsis of the film reads, "Esther’s terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror hit, Orphan. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. Yet, an unexpected twist arises that pits her against a mother who will protect her family from the murderous “child” at any cost."

The prequel film is directed by William Brent Bell who known for his horror films like Stay Alive, The Devil Inside, Wer, The Boy, Brahms: The Boy II, among others and David Coggeshall serves as the screenwriter.

Orphan: First Kill will release in cinemas as well as on Paramount+ on August 19, 2022.
