Sanjay Leela Bhansali's production and Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi was drifting smoothly towards the release date, receiving a good reaction from fans to the trailer and songs. However, the easy-going journey was short-lived as soon there were petitions and cases filed against the film's name, demanding name change and delay in its release. The matter went to court and the decision of the Supreme Court on Gangubai Kathiawadi's release date came on Thursday.

Supreme Court On Gangubai Kathiawadi

A man named Babu Ravji Shah, reportedly claiming to be real Gangubai's adopted son, filed a plea to delay the release date of the film as it was defamatory. The plea that first went to Bombay High Court was dismissed as Babu Ravji Shah was not able to produce documents and proofs in favour of his claim to be the son of the woman on whom the film is based. The matter then went to the Supreme Court and the upper court preserved HC's decision.

On Wednesday,  February 23, Supreme Court reportedly suggested to Bhansali that if they can, they should change the name of the movie to which Bhansali's lawyer, Siddhartha Dave, said that they will consider the court's suggestion. However, on Thursday he said that name change was not possible at such short notice with the films promotions being done with the same name and release date just a day later.

After this, on February 24, Supreme Court dismissed Babu Ravji's plea as he was not able to prove his claim and declared that the film will release as planned and there will be no changes in the release date. Apart from Shah, Gangubai Kathiawadi reportedly had cases filed against it by Maharashtra MLA Amin Patel and Kamathipura resident Shraddha Surve as well. With Supreme Court's order, the movie will release as planned, on February 25.
