Six of my favourite on-screen female cops

1. Shivani Shivaji Roy (Mardaani 1 and 2)

Rani Mukherjee aced the role of officer Shivani Shivaji Roy in both Mardaani and its sequel. In the 2014 version of the movie, she undergoes one challenge after the other to save a minor orphan girl from human trafficking. But is ultimately successful in overcoming them and completing the task. In the sequel, Roy returns to catch a rapist and murderer. As the movie ends, we see Roy beating him up. The Mardaani series and Mukherjee's performance impressed the audience so much that the production house was supposed to announce a possible third installment in the series with Mukherjee reprising her role. However, there are no further updates.

2. Vartika Chaturvedi (Delhi Crime)

The Netflix original drama series is based on the 2012 Delhi gangrape case, popularly known as the Nirbhaya case, that took place in the neighbourhood of Munirka in South Delhi. DCP Vartika Chaturvedi (Shefali Shah) is in charge of the case. She finds lapses of department when she starts her investigation. So, she makes a team of her best officers to catch the perpetrators. We find her facing difficulties throughout the 7-episode-series but not for once do we see her giving up. Even the public and media wrath and political fall out do not prevent her from carrying out her task honestly.

3. SP Abha Mathur (Jai Gangaajal)

Jai Gangaajal tells the story of Bakinpur district where anyone who tries to enforce rules and laws of civil society is seen as a hindrance and is quickly removed to maintain the status quo. The Guardian Minister brings Abha Mathur (Priyanka Chopra) as the Superintendent of Police, at a critical time, when elections are due. She is a woman of her own will and not conventionally flexible. Mathur finds the ground reality disturbing and the plight of the common people rattles her. When an accident catapults the mob itself into meting out raw justice, she finds herself in a dilemma and searches for the voice of her own conscience.

4. Soni (Soni)

Soni is a 2018 Netflix original film that revolves around the life of a young Delhi-based policewoman, Soni. Along with her superintendent Kalpana, she fights against the crimes women face in the city. Due to alleged misconduct on duty, she is transferred and her problems increase when her estranged husband returns. This critically acclaimed Netflix original is a fine example of women empowerment and is a must watch. Geetika Vidya Ohlyan's performance as Soni acts as the cherry on the cake.

5. IG Meera Deshmukh (Drishyam)

When IG Meera Deshmukh's (Tabu) son goes missing, she begins an investigation of the case. The suspects try to mislead her through their cleverly crafted answers, she remains firm and continues with her work. She is ready to go to any extent to reveal the truth. Deshmukh is thus one of the most powerful on-screen female cops seen in Indian cinema. Tabu's performance in the movie is as gripping as the thriller itself.

6. Nusrat Saeed (Asur)

Played by Ridhi Dogra, Nusrat Saeed is a CBI officer who assists inspector Dhananjay in the investigation of murders that appear to be completely unrelated to one another. Though Saeed is a supporting character in the web series, she catches the attention of the audience with her sharp investigation skills. She is an efficient cop who puts her duty before everything else. A spine chilling thriller, Asur gives us a glimpse into the dark side of the human beings. At the same time, it brings home the fact that one must never underestimate the abilities of female cops.
