Kate Winslet said she was bullied by the press after she starred in James Cameron’s hit film Titanic at the age of 21. The Hollywood star recently opened up about getting “bullied” and how she “went into self-protective mode right away” after the release of her superhit filmfor which she was Oscar-nominated. Winslet said on Marc Maron’s podcast WTF that she was subjected to a lot of “personal physical scrutiny” and was criticized a lot. Further talking about the British press, in particular, she revealed that they were “quite unkind to me.”

Winslet, who has joined hands with Cameron again for the sequel of 2009 sci-fi film Avatar, said that she “felt bullied if I’m honest” by the way the press treated her after Titanic‘s release. The Oscar-winner actor said she continued thinking about those “horrible” moments that also somehow made her realise that “if that’s what being famous was, I was not ready to be famous, definitely not.”

Winslet, who won her first Oscar for her portrayal of a German woman in the 2008 film The Reader, said at that moment she was still learning “how to act” and “felt I wasn’t ready to do lots of big Hollywood jobs.” Winslet added, “I didn’t want to make mistakes and blow it, I wanted to be in it for the long game. I strategically tried to find small things so I could understand the craft a bit better and maintain some degree of privacy and dignity.”

Talking about working with director Cameron again, she described it as an “amazing” experience. The Avatar sequel also stars Cliff Curtis alongside Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington. “She was really excited about doing the water work and at her peak, I think she held her breath for seven-and-a-half minutes… during the training,” Cameron said in 2019. “She was regularly doing two-or-three minute scenes, underwater acting and swimming. She truly embraced the physicality of the character,” he added. Several reports also corroborated the fact that Winslet had to hold her breath underwater for seven minutes while shooting for Avatar 2.

Although she “slightly lost track” as Winslet joked during the hard time, this year she might get nominated for an Oscar for her lead role in Francis Lee’s Ammonite.
