Over a year after Will Smith slapped the Oscar host, Chris Rock, his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, has finally shared her perspective on the incident. She also revealed that she and her husband, Will Smith, have been separated since 2016 and were not living together at the time of the incident.
Speaking exclusively to Variety, Jada Smith explained that she hasn’t spoken to Chris, and she desired that all the misunderstandings around this could be cleared up and there could be peace.
The controversy arose when Chris Rock remarked on Jada Smith’s appearance during the Oscar ceremony, seemingly unaware of her medical condition. This caused Will Smith to go to the stage and slap the comedian across the face.

In the same interview, when Jada was asked if she was offended by Chris’s joke, she said that's what comedians do. Further, she added that all she has to say is that she’s not really here to make any judgements on how people decide to express themselves and their art. “I’ll say that several times I’ve had my feelings hurt, for sure. I’ve had my feelings hurt a lot by Chris. But at the end of the day, too, being in the spotlight comes with territory,” she told Variety.
Jada Smith also revealed that Chris approached her after the event and offered an apology for the remark. Recalling the incident, she said that he came down to the end of the stage and tried to apologise to her, saying he didn’t mean any harm. She had replied that she couldn’t talk about it now, adding, “This is some old sh*t.”
After the incident at the Oscars, Will Smith announced his resignation from the film academy. Notably, he also received the Best Actor award for portraying Richard Williams in the film King Richard at the same event.
Jada Smith Confirms Being Separated From Will Smith
In the interview with Variety, Jada Smith also revealed that she and Will Smith have been living separately since 2016. Explaining why they hadn’t publicly announced it, she said that they hadn't been ready yet. She added that they are still trying to figure out how to be in a partnership and how to present that to people.
She added that by 2016, they were exhausted after trying everything, adding that she felt they were both stuck in their fantasies of what they thought the other person should be.
Explaining why divorce is not on the cards, Jada Smith said that she made a promise that there will never be a reason for them to get a divorce, and they will work through whatever it is. “I just haven’t been able to break that promise,” she added.
