Indian Films On Surrogacy

A) Filhaal (2002)

The movie filhaal, took a step towards bringing awareness about the topic of surrogacy starring Tabu and Sushmita Sen as female leads. The plot of the movie depicts how married Tabu wasn't able to conceive a baby but then her friend Who was played by Sushmita comes forward to become a surrogate mother for her friend. This movie beautifully portrayed the aspect of surrogacy as well as the bond of friendship between the two female leads in the story.

B) Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001)

Chori Chori Chupke Chupke portrays Salman khan and Rani Mukherji as a couple, who are desperate to have a baby and are unable to. The couple find a woman who can bear their child for a million rupees. The movie straight forwardly doesn't highlight surrogacy, but do normalise birth via other means.

C) Mimi (2021)

Mimi starring Kriti Sanon portrays the aspect of surrogacy as a way of choosing motherhood. This story line is reversed, it shows surrogacy from surrogate woman's lens. Kriti Sanon's character of a dancer agrees to be a surrogate mother for an American couple in exchange for 20 lakh rupees. Later the couple ditched the baby asking surrogate to abort it as the child may have deformity, but surrogate  decides to keep the baby fighting all the ups and downs.

D) Doosri Dulhan (1983)

Doosri Dulhan was one of the first movies to portray the topic of surrogacy on the big screen, starring Shabana Aazmi, Sharmila Tagore, and Victor Banerjee, this movie revolves around the story of a couple who hires a prostitute to be the surrogate mother for their child. As the topic was considered shameful and sensitive at the time when the movie was released, this movie failed to create a good impact at the box office and turned out to be a flop.

E) Good Newwz

The comedy-drama movie Good newwz starring Akshay Kumar, and Kareena Kapoor as a childless couple who decide to opt for In-Vito fertilisation, they face trouble when there is a sperm mixup with another couple with the same surname as them, played by Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani. The two couple decides mutually to surrogate for one another and ends up having two daughters who they start loving unconditionally.

All these movies portrayed the sensitive topic of surrogacy on the big screen in their way. It did create some ripples  in the perspective of people and their way of perceiving the surrogacy. Hope more movies come in and normalise the  different ways of attaining parenthood.
