Gangubai Kathiawadi cast has been making headlines since the film's first trailer was unveiled by the makers. Bhatt's portrayal of Gangu and Vijay Raaz's portrayal of transwomen has already sparked controversy. The film is set to hit theatres on February 25th. So here is what we know about the cast of the film

Alia Bhatt plays Ganga Harjivandas, alias Gangubai Kathiawadi, a female mafia don and the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura. She was known for fighting for sex workers' rights and operated out of the Hiramandi red light district. Her statue was created in the Kamathipura neighbourhood in honour of her humanitarian activities. The film is based on chapters from the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges.

Shantanu Maheshwari

Shantanu Maheshwari is an actor, dancer, choreographer, and television host. Maheshwari will make his major film debut with Alia Bhatt in this Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. As per reports, he will be seen as Ramnik Lal who is Gangu's Love interest. He was seen in the second song of the movie 'Jab Saiyyan'. The song has the actor sharing screen space with Bhatt.

Vijay Raaz

Vijay Raaz is an Indian actor, director, narrator and comedian who rose to fame with Monsoon Wedding and was recently appeared in the films Toofaan and Sherni. In Gangubai Kathiawadi, Raaz is seen as a Raziabai, a transwoman, which has created controversy among fans. While some praised the actor's adaptability, others condemned the filmmakers for casting a cisgender actor in the role of a transwoman.

Indira Tiwari

Indira Tiwari is an actor who earlier featured in  Aarakshan (2011), Nazarband (2020), and Serious Men (2020). She will play Kamli in Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Seema Pahwa

Seema Pahwa is an actor and director from India. She was nominated twice for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for the films Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017). She will be seen as an important character in the film.

Varun Kapoor

Varun Kapoor has been seen in Swaragini-Jodein Rishton Ke Sur as Sanskaar Maheshwari and Savitri Devi College & Hospital as Dr Veer Malhotra. As per reports, he will also make his Bollywood debut with the film Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Jim Sarbh 

Jim Sarbh who is currently seen playing Homi J Bhabha in the show Rocket Boys will also be part of the film in a cameo. Sarbh has also directed and acted in a number of Indian theatre performances.

Other cameo roles in Gangubai Kathiwadi will be ">played by Ajay Devgn as Karim Lala, a don who became Gangubai's sworn brother and Huma Qureshi as Dilruba.
