The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival has been serving major glamorous red carpet looks ever since it kicked off on May 13. While celebrities from around the world have been setting fashion goals, an unexpected furry guest has managed to steal the spotlight.
Meet Felicity, a stunning Samoyed dog who is now a Cannes regular. Since her debut in 2023, Felicity’s elegant gowns and poised yet adorable demeanour have won hearts across the globe. But Felicity's journey goes far beyond dazzling appearances on the Cannes red carpet. She was rescued from the horrific dog meat trade in China, where she had been strung up by her tail, back in 2018, as reported by the Daily Mail. The infamous Yulin Dog Meat Festival, brought to international attention by No To Dog Meat, a UK-based charity, was where her story began.
The charity stepped in and saved Felicity's life, giving her a new beginning in London. She now lives with the charity’s founder, Julia de Cadenet, who was compelled to start the organisation after witnessing the brutality of the dog meat trade firsthand.
In 2018, Julia gained access to a slaughterhouse where dogs and cats were being killed for the meat market in China. With help from a local supporter, she managed to negotiate the release of 17 animals, including Felicity.
The dog meat market is widespread in South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, and China.
Today, the charity holds United Nations Special Consultative Status and continues its fight to end this cruelty. Felicity, known for her friendly and outgoing personality, now serves as the charity’s brand ambassador and symbol of hope.
The Cannes Film Festival, famously supportive of humanitarian causes, welcomed Felicity this year with open arms. She even had her own entry pass and access to VIP parties and film screenings.
How Internet Reacted To Felicity's Cannes Arrival
In 2023, Felicity made her grand Cannes debut at a screening of Project Silence. Donning a custom gown crafted by Michelle Parker, Felicity had since then made her place as a Cannes favourite.
One user commented, "This is the type of Cannes content I'm here for."
While other netizens immediately recognised Felicity and her brave rescue story. Donning a Royal Blue gown, Felicity's calm demeanour on the red carpet stole hearts.
