From Delhi Streets to Oscars: 'Anuja' Star Sajda Pathan's Story

The story follows 9-year-old Anuja, a child labourer working in a Delhi cloth factory, whose life takes an unexpected turn when she gets the opportunity to attend school. However, this chance comes with a life-altering decision—one that will shape not only her future but also that of her sister.

Shot in Delhi, Anuja sheds light on the harsh realities of education for the underprivileged in India. While the government prides itself on the transformation of government schools in the national capital, the film delves deeper into the grassroots challenges faced by children like Anuja. It also highlights the persistent struggles of girls in a society where gender inequality remains a stark reality.

The titular role is portrayed by 9-year-old Sajda Pathan, whose powerful performance has captivated audiences and critics alike. For those eager to witness her remarkable talent, Anuja will stream on Netflix later this year, bringing this poignant story to a global audience.

Who Is Sajda Pathan?

Sajda Pathan rose from the slums and was rescued from the streets by an NGO, has previously worked in The Braid (La Tresse), an acclaimed French film directed by Laetitia Colombani, where she shared screen space with Mia Maelzer. Anuja is her second film.

Sajda was a child labourer in Delhi. The Salaam Baalak Trust rescued her, and she currently resides at the NGO's SBT Day Care Center. Salaam Baalak Trust was set up in 1988 from the proceeds of Mira Nair's Oscar-nominated film Salaam Bombay. The trust has co-produced Anuja in collaboration with Shine Global and Krushan Naik Films.

Priyanka Chopra and Monga praised the nine-year-old for her performance. "This film is a beautiful reminder of the power of storytelling and how it can shine a light on love, family, and resilience in the most authentic way." Priyanka wrote.
