‘Representation Matters’ Fans Stumped Over Desi Wedding Sequence In ‘Ms Marvel’

Ms Marvel Review, Desi Wedding In Ms Marvel
Ever since Ms Marvel was announced by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, social media has been floored by the South Asian representation of the show. On June 22, the third episode of the series was released and fans were delighted to see a desi wedding which was replete with Bollywood music.

Ms Marvel is the MCU Phase 4 miniseries which is based on the story of Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American girl living in Jersey City. Khan is in awe of the superheroes, especially Captain Marvel, and later realises that she too has superpowers. The third episode begins with the wedding sequence of Kamala’s sibling Amir’s wedding. This definitely meant that the series will have a desi wedding.

Although there are inaccuracies in the way the wedding sequence has been shot, the audience has overlooked much of it because they got an opportunity to see a desi wedding in the MCU.

Reportedly, the wedding sequence began with a Mehendi ceremony, followed by Amir’s shoes being stolen which was aptly set to 90s classic Hum Aapke Hain Koun‘s song Joote Do Paise Lo. All the charades were followed by a wedding and a reception which saw Kamala’s family put up dance performances to the bride and groom to iconic Bollywood songs like Yeh Mera Dil from 1978 film Don and 2013 film Dil Bole Hadippa‘s title track.

While some Twitter users weren’t happy with the wedding sequence, many overlooked it and appreciated it. “This is the most fun I had with the MCU since Loki,” a fan quipped. While another wrote, “I can’t believe we got a desi wedding in the MCU, I teared up. Representation matters.”

Even musician Chinmayi Sripada was elated to see her song be featured on the Marvel show. “Tere Bina in Ms Marvel Ep3 [heart emoji] Kinda nice to see my name on a tracklist of a Marvel show,” she wrote in her tweet sharing the photo of the credits.

Ms Marvel stars Iman Vellani as Kamala, while Indian actors Mohan Kapur, Zenobia Shroff and Saagar Shaikh play their family. The show will also have cameos of actors Farhan Akhtar and Fawad Khan in the six-episode show. Meanwhile, Vellani will reprise her role in the MCU film The Marvels later this year.
