The new season of Bridgerton is around the corner and has fans eagerly waiting. After the first season was released, the show separated itself from the period drama genre by including the relevant conversations, important representations and significant female character arcs.
The character of Daphne (played by Phoebe Dynevor) was kept realistic and truthful by not including the lofty ideas of empowerment which meant nothing to the women of that era. Her objective in life was to get married and be a good wife. She has desires but is unaware of them. It is the way she has been raised and no one has the right to question her drive towards getting what she wants in life.
Bridgerton Best Scenes
Just like Daphne, the show had other female characters written in a way that the audience cannot forget them. The dual character of Lady Whistledown and Penelope Featherington played by Nicola Coughlan is especially meaningful. Penelope being a girl who is often ignored by her family members and society finds a way to leave her mark on them. She has agency as Lady Whistledown who writes pamphlets to the people about the people. She makes use of her invisible personality and demands attention from the public.
The words she writes matters and makes impact on people. Sometimes she goes rogue and ruins reputations, but if the character did not misuse that privilege, she would not be as real as the makers had intended her to be. Many other characters in the show add value to the show's plot by demonstrating their inner and outer struggles and how they face them.
Ahead of season 2 here are five special moments shown in season one which set the bar high for the upcoming seasons
Colin and Penelope
Penelope likes Colin but she is not very expressive about that. Even though Colin is unaware of that, he always has a tender approach towards Penelope. In the first season, a woman named Cressida throws her drink at Penelope's dress and ruins the night for her. It was Colin who extended his hand to Penelope for help. He held and brought her back to the dance floor.
Lady Featherington's advice
The show is about the Bridgerton family hence they are made to look the best. Lady Featherington is shown as not the typical example of a great mother. She is seen scheming and being cunning in her ways to get what she wants. She often loses to Lady Bridgerton and Lady Danbury. When Marina comes to stay with her and has a child in her belly, Lady Featherington gives her the most realistic advice. She is not cross about it and seems more helpful to Marina than Lady Bridgerton was ever to Daphne. Lady Featherington keeps her indifference aside and tells Marina that she is stronger than her and that she will do well.

Women coming together
When a man named Nigel was after Daphne, it was the women of Bridgerton family who devised a plan to chase him away. After meeting Simon (Daphne's love interest played by Rege-Jean Page) Nigel persists on marrying Daphne. Then the staff of the house and the female family members come together and make a plan to remove Nigel from Daphne's life once and for all. It was interesting to see how Bridgerton women did not really need a man at that point.
Daphne's first dinner
For the entire season, Daphne and Simon were seen at their most vulnerable and close when they danced together. From their first dance together, they were solving their issues by talking and arguing. After marrying Simon, Daphne gets to know the big secret he had been hiding and it was something that could break the two apart. But the two eventually sort things out in the rain, while dancing in front of the whole crowd. The element of romance in the scene won hearts and showed the two main leads as their most tender selves.
When Daphne confronts Lady Bridgerton
Right before leaving her home to be with Simon after their wedding, Daphne is seen talking to her mother about the physical relations one makes with their spouses. To the audience's disappointment, Lady Bridgerton does not share much. She is hesitant so she decides to not tell her daughter what she must know before she leaves home to be someone's wife. When Daphne figures somethings out on her own, she feels angry at her mother. Daphne bashes her mother for keeping some important things from her. It was one of the moments that made many in the audience think and reflect. It is surprising how even in the modern world, mothers are hesitant to talk to about sex with their children.
Last but not the least, the intimate scenes between Simon and Daphne were the highlight of the first season. It is seldom that such scenes are shown through a female gaze where the woman's pleasure is important. The makers kept the bedroom scenes tasteful and skillfully choreographed. Here's hoping that Bridgerton season 2 is just as intriguing as the first one. The show will stream new episodes from March 25 on Netflix.
