Bollywood’s obsession with topics of infidelity and adultery is not hidden from movie lovers.

From the era of cinema during the 1970s to the current date, we have many classic movies which have taken up the topic with great maturity. Keeping in mind the family structures of India and the fabric that binds together the relationship, movies have handled the topics with great care. While some of them like Silsila, Arth, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam were heartbreaking, others like No Entry, Masti, Thank You were just light-hearted ones that passed off adultery as a joke.

As we see the release of the modern-day complex love story Gehraiyaan involving elements of infidelity in it, here is a list of five Bollywood movies that you need to watch before.

Five Bollywood Movies On Adultery That You Can Watch:

Silsila

The classic movie by Yash Chopra is still loved by many people for the amazing characters, soothing songs, and locations throughout the movie. The movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha, and Shashi Kapoor in the mail roles. After Shekhar (Shashi Kapoor) dies in a plane crash, his brother Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) breaks up with his girlfriend Chandni(Rekha) and marries Shekhar’s fiancé Shobha (Jaya Bachchan) who is pregnant with a child.

In another tragedy, Shobha loses her child in a car accident, and without any feeling from each other, the two start drifting apart. Amit rekindles his love with long-lost Chandni after they meet somewhere. Chandni is now married to another man called Anand, who is unaware of the infidelity of Chandni. After a plane accident where Shobha and Anand were traveling, Amit and Chandni realise their love for better halves and part ways.

Astitva

Astitva is the story of Aditi (Tabu) who is entangled in the complex story of marital relation, domestic abuse, and adultery. When Shrikant Pandit- Aditi’s husband(Sachin Khedekar) gets to know about Aditi’s 25-year-old pregnancy, he goes to the root of the matter and finds out that the kid is not his. Shrikant confronts Aditi with facts and asks for her explanation regarding the whole matter and why did she lie to him.

The story then runs as a flashback and it is shown that Shrikant used to leave her newlywed wife at home and eventually she was left lonely without any company. Even when she asked to let her work somewhere, Shrikant took it as an insult and said no woman from her house ever left for a job.

Hamari Adhuri Kahani

Hamari Adhuri Kahani is a story of middle-class woman Vasudha (played by Vidya Balan) who is trying to make a livelihood with her son after her husband Hari (played by Rajkumar Rao) goes missing for years. She, however, has not-so-good memories of being with him and never felt what it is to fall in love, as she was a survivor of domestic abuse. Until she meets Aarav (played by Emraan Hashmi) who is also her boss and a wealthy man.

Just as their love story progresses, Hari returns as a fanatic and makes her life miserable. The movie by Mohit Suri about three characters trying to make a peace in their chaotic lives is full of twist and turn for the audience. It is one of the movies on adultery that you cannot miss.

Manmarziyaan

The movie shows the love triangle of a trio Rumi (Taapsee Pannu), Vicky(played by Vicky Kaushal), and Robbie (played by Abhishek Bachchan). Rumi is a happy-to-go, young and active girl who falls in love with a roadside Romeo Vicky who is not at all liked by her parents. However, Rumi promised her parents that Vicky will come along with his parents to ask them about their marriage, but Vicky does not show up.

Manmarziyaan

Rumi agrees to an arranged marriage with a boy of her parent’s choice- Robbie and eventually marries him. With time, Robbie realises that she does not have any feelings for him, and on finding Rumi cheating him with Vicky, he files for annulment. Rumi realises that she is in love with Robbie and Vicky was never a “husband material” that she wanted.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

The 2006 movie by Karan Johar stars Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, and Shahrukh Khan in the main roles. Maya(Rani Mukherjee) and Dev(Shahrukh Khan) are strangers and meet each other just before Maya goes to marry Rishi(played by Abhishek Bachchan). They connect instantly, however, they part ways and Dev meets with an accident leading to impairment. As a result of this, he feels inferior to his wife Rhea(played by Zinta) who is a successful magazine editor.

The wedding life of Rishi and Maya is not good as well, since Maya cannot take up the childish behaviour of Rishi. When Dev and Maya meet again, they confess their love for each other and feel bad about cheating their spouses. They later get divorced from their spouses but do not tell each other about it. The topic of adultery was handled by Johar with maturity in the movie and few commented it to be his finest work to date.
