During the September 14 hearing of the defamation case, Ranaut's lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui submitted a health certificate, also telling the court that the actor has not been keeping well. "She has been travelling a lot to promote her film and has been meeting a lot of people. So she has probably contracted Covid due to that," said Siddiqui, adding that Ranaut will soon undergo testing for COVID-19.

As reported by the Bar and Bench, Ranaut's lawyer went on to add that the actor would be present for the next hearing of the case, unless she tests positive for COVID-19. In that case, he would submit another plea in the court on Ranaut's behalf. Akthar's lawyers Jay Bharadwaj and Priya Arora questioned Ranaut's continuous absence from hearings. They pointed out that Akhtar had diligently attended every single hearing so far.

Responding to the plea of Akhtar's lawyers to issue a warrant against Ranaut, Magistrate RR Khan said, "If she fails to appear, I will issue an arrest warrant."

On September 9, the Bombay High Court had dismissed a plea filed by Kangana Ranaut seeking to quash the proceedings of the defamation case.

The case goes back to last year, when lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar had filed a criminal defamation case against Ranaut for her alleged remarks against him during interviews that followed the death of Sushant Singh Rajput in November. Akhtar alleged that Ranaut had made baseless allegations against him during multiple interviews that had caused damage to his reputation. In December, the metropolitan magistrate court had directed Mumbai police to begin an investigation into the case. Read more about the case here.

The next hearing, in this case, is scheduled for September 20.
