The Oscars, Hollywood's grandest stage for both cinematic excellence and fashion extravagance, have always been a platform where statements are made, whether through eloquent speeches or daring fashion choices. This year was no exception, as Emily Blunt and her Oppenheimer co-star, Florence Pugh, took to the red carpet in ensembles that left viewers and netizens alike in awe and wonder.

The spotlight was particularly on the gravity-defying couture worn by Blunt and Pugh, featuring dresses with floating straps that seemed to defy the laws of physics. While initially perplexing, it soon became clear that these straps were intentionally designed to float, adding an ethereal and whimsical element to their attire.

So, are these floating straps the new ‘cool’ thing?

Blunt's gown, a creation from Schiaparelli's spring 2024 couture show by the visionary Daniel Roseberry, showcased his mastery of trompe l'oeil. The champagne-colored gown featured an illusion of men's briefs and a structured tank strap that appeared to hover above Blunt's body, creating an illusion of weightlessness. While the materials used to achieve this effect remain a mystery, one thing is certain: the bodice was meticulously tailored to ensure a flawless fit, allowing the straps to float effortlessly.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Blunt's stylist, Jessica Paster, shed light on the inspiration behind the actress's daring fashion choice. She explained, “Sometimes we don't play it safe. At this point of years of being with Emily, we can go have fun with fashion,” she added. “Did I know that people were going to talk about the shoulder? Absolutely. Do I care what anybody else has to say? I think that people that know fashion, like fashion, like interesting things, were going to like it and I know the people that like some very classic things were not going to like it. At the end of the day, she looked absolutely beautiful. It was such a beautiful dress.”

Pugh, too, made a statement with her choice of attire, donning a dress with gravity-defying spaghetti straps from Del Core's spring 2024 collection. Unlike Blunt's gown, Pugh's dress featured a hidden second strap for reinforcement, ensuring both style and functionality.

Uncanny as it was, the netizens seemed perplexed. An Instagram user commented, “The floating straps made the dress look ill-fitted and silly.” Another said, “It was distracting. It looks like a bad fit.” But some of them are welcoming the floating straps as a relief with the summer coming.

We will be waiting to see the unfurling of the floating strap in the world of fashion. Does it have what it takes to stay or is it gonna float away in thin air? Only time will tell, but for now, let's celebrate the daring spirit of Blunt, Pugh, and all those who dare to defy gravity in the name of fashion.
