5 Female-Centric Films We Are Looking Forward To In 2022

The year 2021 witnessed some great female-centric releases in Bollywood like Pagglait, Mimi, Saina, The Girl On The Train, Sherni, etc. We fell in love with these movies because the female actors in these films are not treated as beautiful objects they are central to the story and take the narrative ahead.

The timelines for the new releases in theatres have been announced and people are waiting for some power-packed performances in the coming year too. Here is a list of 5 films which we are looking forward to:

1. Gangubai Kathiawadi

With Alia Bhatt in the main role, the movie is set to release in theatres by February 2022. The movie is a biographical crime drama about a woman becoming a powerful underworld figure. This story takes you to the journey of a young girl named Ganga who later becomes Gangubai- the power figure in a red light area of Kamathipura in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The movie is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ajay Devgn and Emran Hashmi too have a cameo appearance in the movie. The bold and impactful character portrayed by Alia sets our expectations high from this film.

2. Dhaakad

Dhaakad is termed as "India's first female-led action thriller". The movie has Kangana Ranaut in the main role of Agent Agni. The thriller is considered by Kangana as a benchmark for her career and turning point for Indian cinema.

Fans have high hopes for the actor who never fails to impress through her unforgettable presence in female-led movies like Queen, Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Panga, Manikarnika and the latest Thalaivii. Even though the date of release was announced to be October 1, 2021, the movie has not been released yet and will be released sometime in 2022.

3. Double XL

Well, this one is the latest addition to the list whose teaser was launched today on social media by actors Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi. The movie is expected to release in the summer of 2022. Double XL reportedly revolves around body shaming faced by women and the teaser looks promising.

The movie will feature Huma and Sonakshi covers issues faced by plus-size women everyday-be it from friends in the form of jokes, or family in the form of advice from society. The short clips shared by the actors show how they faced trolling at beginning of their careers.

4. Jee Le Zara

The movie is said to be Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara's female version and the fans are hoping that this movie on "girls trip" will be another benchmark in storytelling. The movie has three leading ladies - Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt. As Priyanka explains that Farhan Akhtar was already working on a movie revolving around a female friendship.

"The idea grew into a movie helmed by an all-female cast", says Priyanka. The friendship, sisterhood that the girls have off-screen is expected to replicate on screen as well. The movie has been creating buzz and the movie is to go on floors in 2022.

5. Shabaash Mithu

The film will be based on the journey popular female cricketer and current test and ODI captain of the Indian women cricket team, Mithali Raj. The movie has Taapsee Pannu in the lead role and is produced under the banner of Viacom18 studios. It is directed by Srijit Mukherjee. This is going to be the first biopic to be based on the life of a woman cricketer in India.

Having won Padma Shri, Arjuna Awards, BBC 100 Women, Khel Ratna Award, Wisden Leading Woman Cricketer in the World, Mithali is a shining name in global sports and certainly an inspiration to many girls in India. The movie is scheduled to release in February 2022.
