Huggy Wuggy: Here’s Why This Fictional Character Has Sparked Child Safety Concerns

Who Is Huggy Wuggy
With the rising access to mobile games among kids, the creators have been coming up with creative and charismatic visuals to attract kids into choosing their creations. However, many of these cartoons might not have the best of intentions in mind for young children. Case in point- Huggy Wuggy, a blue teddy-bear like character that is part of the horror-survival game Poppy Playtime developed by MOB Games.

The character has become widely popular on YouTube, TikTok and Roblox. Even with its wildly sharp teeth and eerie body, Huggy Wuggy has become a viral trend on social media as kids these days have found it rather appealing. However, concerns are also being raised on the violent nature of the game and the teddy bear itself, which promises to hug people forever “till you breathe your last breath together”.

Huggy Wuggy is a blue teddy-bear like character in recently released horror-survival game Poppy Playtime developed by MOB Games.

Huggy Wuggy is the main antagonist in the horror-survival game Poppy Playtime who appears at the first level of the game in Chapter 1. One possible explanation for its popularity among kids can be that kids don’t perceive horror or fear as adults do. Apparently, the characters in Poppy Playtime appear kids friendly at the surface while they become scary over the course of the game. Thus kids are gradually conditioned by the game to like the characters, but then they might instil fear in the longer run, also confusing kids with their changing behaviour.

Given that kids today are a lot smarter than adults think, it is quite possible that many of them do understand that Huggy Wuggy is an animated character and that whatever happens in the game is merely fictional. However, other kids might find such videos disturbing and that is the reason why the character and the game have sparked concerns.

Schools in UK are warning parents against the “deceiving character” influencing children. A UK school principal even pointed out at how easily children have access to Huggy Wuggy, writing, “it has been brought to my attention that a character named ‘Huggy Wuggy’ is being viewed by our children online… The character can be easily viewed on YouTube channels and is a teddy bear with razor-sharp teeth that sings worrying songs about hugging and killing.” The British police have also warned parents to instruct their kids to avoid watching the character on social media.

Parents are concerned about how the bear talks about hugging and killing people in the same breath, deceiving youngsters. In one such video, Huggy Wuggy tells viewers “lean in for a spine breaking embrace”.
