Affirmative action can also be termed as positive discrimination, is basically a policy that helps in providing opportunities to underrepresented groups- Black, Hispanic, and other minority students in colleges and universities and increase their representation.

A national discussion on equal access to education was sparked by the historic decision, which notably attacked Harvard University and the University of North Carolina's use of race in admissions.'

Kamala Harris On Affirmative Action Ruling

Vice President Harris expressed her concerns, emphasising that the Supreme Court's decision ignores the significance of historical disparities and the undeniable benefits that diversity brings to classrooms and boardrooms alike. "This is not about being colour-blind; it is about being blind to history, empirical evidence, and the strength that diversity imparts," she asserted passionately.

According to a report in The Washington Post, the apex court's ruling stemmed from growing allegations that these universities' admission policies unfairly favoured Black, Hispanic, and Native American applicants at the expense of White and Asian individuals. In a majority 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court effectively dismantled affirmative action, which had previously utilised race as a factor in college admissions.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts, writing for the majority, elucidated the court's stance, stating, "Students should be evaluated based on their individual experiences, not their race." The ruling marks a significant shift in the judicial landscape and has drawn criticism from President Joe Biden, who expressed his strong disagreement with the court's decision.

President Biden denounced the ruling as effectively ending affirmative action and rolling back decades of progress. He passionately asserted his belief that the promise of America encompasses equal opportunities for everyone to succeed, regardless of their background. Highlighting the transformative power of diversity, he argued that colleges are stronger and the nation thrives when it taps into the full spectrum of talent within its borders.

"We cannot let this decision be the last word," President Biden emphasised. He called for continued efforts to ensure equal opportunity, asserting that while talent, creativity, and hard work are distributed across the country, equal opportunity is not. The president's remarks underscored his commitment to expanding access to education and striving for a fair and inclusive society.

Former President Barack Obama has voiced his strong opposition to the recent decision alongside his wife Michelle, crediting affirmative action policies for enabling them and countless other students to "prove we belonged."

Obama emphasised the importance of these policies in ensuring equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their race or ethnicity. He took to social media to express his disappointment, stating, "Affirmative action was never a complete answer in the drive towards a more just society. But for generations of students who had been systematically excluded from most of America's key institutions, it gave us the chance to show we more than deserved a seat at the table."

Former First Lady Michelle Obama, in a separate statement, expressed her empathy for young individuals uncertain about their future due to the ruling. "My heart breaks for any young person out there who's wondering what their future holds and what kinds of chances will be open to them," she said.

She also acknowledged the determination and resilience exhibited by students who have had to overcome greater obstacles to succeed. "Today is a reminder that we've got to do the work not just to enact policies that reflect our values of equity and fairness, but to truly make those values real in all of our schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods." she exclaimed.

Meanwhile, Former President Donald Trump celebrated the decision as a victory, asserting that it would enhance America's competitiveness on a global scale. The former president, sharing his thoughts on his Truth Social platform, remarked, "This is the ruling everyone was waiting and hoping for, and the result was amazing. It will also keep us competitive with the rest of the world. Our greatest minds must be cherished, and that's what this wonderful day has brought. We're going back to all merit-based, and that's the way it should be!"

The Supreme Court's decision has undoubtedly reverberated throughout the nation, reigniting the contentious debate over affirmative action and raising questions about the future of equal opportunity in higher education. As advocates and critics grapple with the implications of this landmark ruling, it remains to be seen how colleges and universities will navigate the path forward and how the pursuit of diversity and inclusivity will evolve in the years to come.
