Kavita Chand from Almora, Uttarakhand, has achieved a remarkable milestone by climbing Antarctica's Mount Vinson, the highest mountain peak standing at 4,892 metres, and hoisting the Indian national flag at its summit. The achievement places her among a very small group of climbers worldwide who have managed to conquer the icy giant.
Mount Vinson is known for its brutal conditions. Temperatures can go below freezing, winds are unpredictable, and the mountain lies in complete isolation.
Unlike other mountaineering destinations, Antarctica offers no margin for error. Every climb depends on planning, physical endurance, and mental strength.
Background and career transition
The Journey to Antarctica
The expedition began in early December, with travel from India to Punta Arenas in Chile, the main gateway to Antarctica. From there, Kavita and her team flew to Union Glacier Camp, a remote base on the continent.
The climb involved moving through multiple camps, gradual acclimatisation, and navigating vast stretches of ice and snow.
Kavita Chand’s success is not a story of sudden inspiration or luck. It is the result of long-term discipline and the courage to pursue such an unconventional path.
The Summit Moment
After days of climbing and enduring extreme conditions, Kavita reached the summit of Mount Vinson on December 14, when she unfurled the Indian tricolour, marking a moment of pride for the country.
The act of hoisting the flag in such a remote location symbolised determination and national presence in global adventure sports, and the growing role of women in these sports.
A step closer: Seven summit challenge
She is actively pursuing the "Seven Summits," aiming to climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. Very few climbers have been able to achieve this milestone, and with Mount Vinson, Kavita has taken a step closer to it.
