In the video, the BJP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Arvind Limbavali can be seen verbally abusing the woman and screaming at her as she tried to hand over a letter to him. He snatched the letter out of her hand and threatened to have her sent to prison.
Reportedly, the woman Ruth Sagai Mary Ameela is an activist who also works for Congress. She explained that she was trying to meet the MLA during his visit to the flood-affected areas in Whitefield, Karnataka.
Ameela was asking the MLA questions about the allegations of land encroachment against her. She claimed that the construction was legal and that she was not encroaching on government land.
Ameela alleged that the MLA had visited her residence earlier, abused her husband and asked the police to take him away. After the incident, she went to speak with him about the incident and was met with insults. She added that an FIR was filed against her, her husband, and her son.
In the video, Ameela can be heard saying, “I’m talking with respect. You’re speaking to a lady, you are also my MLA.” Limbavali responded, “You want respect? You have encroached the land. On top of this, you want respect?”
Limbavali threatened her with police action and later instructed the police to take her away. A female police officer took her to the police station and the police recorded her statement and sent her home.
Ameela said, “MLA Limbavali has instructed the police to boot me out into the prison repeatedly… He also asked the police to drag me to the police station and made me sit there.” She alleged that she was kept in the police station until 10 PM and was not allowed to make any phone calls.
Ameela said that when she tried to show him documents that proved she had not encroached on land but the MLA abused her in “unspeakable language”. She alleged, “The MLA proceeded to insult and attack me. He snatched the document from my hand and threw it on the floor. The police sent him home without registering a complaint.”
