Growing up in a middle-class family, life took a difficult turn when he was just 15. His father lost his job at a wool-combing mill, leaving the family struggling financially. With no other choice, Sabyasachi had to find ways to support himself. He left home and went to Goa, taking up jobs as a waiter and dishwasher to make ends meet.

Despite these hardships, his passion for fashion never faded. He dreamed of studying at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), but his parents refused to fund his education. Determined to follow his dream, he sold his books to afford the application form and successfully secured admission. Through sheer hard work, he managed to finance his education and graduated in 1999.

With a loan of just ₹20,000 from his sister, Sabyasachi launched his own fashion label. He started with three employees in a small space, working tirelessly to build his brand. His big break came in 2002 when he showcased his debut collection, "Kashgar Bazaar," at Lakmé Fashion Week. Inspired by his mother’s artistry, the collection received widespread praise and put him in the spotlight.

By 2003, his "Kora" collection, featuring handwoven fabrics and intricate Kantha embroidery, gained further recognition. His craftsmanship caught international attention, leading him to win the Grand Winner Award at Mercedes-Benz New Asia Fashion Week in Singapore. He also attended workshops by legendary designers Jean Paul Gaultier and Azzedine Alaïa in Paris.

His rise continued when he became the only Indian designer to showcase at Milan Fashion Week in 2004. This milestone solidified his global presence, and soon, his work was being appreciated at major fashion weeks in New York, London, and Miami. Despite facing criticism for being repetitive or too traditional, Sabyasachi never wavered from his vision. He remained committed to creating timeless designs that celebrated Indian heritage.

Today, his label is one of the most successful luxury brands in India. His journey, from struggling to survive as a teenager to becoming a globally renowned designer, is an inspiration to many.
