Jennifer Henderson, a 54-year-old resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, tested positive for COVID-19 in January 2021, and while some of the symptoms, such as headaches and fatigue, went away after approximately one week, her sense of taste and smell continued to persist for about a year.

She regained her sense of smell and taste, but they were changed. For Henderson, who previously had a penchant for cooking and relished the scent of flowers in her garden, the experience was distressing. She expressed her dismay by saying, "It was awful. The majority of food had a repugnant taste, and I was unable to perceive any aroma.”

To her, bananas tasted metallic, garlic tasted like gasoline, and chicken tasted like rotten flesh. In addition to this, she was also unable to smell perfumes, flowers, and her husband's aftershave.
