Who Is Sabrina Siddiqui? Journalist Harassed After Questioning PM

The online harassment of Sabrina Siddiqui highlighted her heritage and labelled her as a "Pakistani Islamist". The journalist had questioned Modi about minorities' rights.

The White House condemned the online harassment and trolling of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) journalist Sabrina Siddiqui who questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Pakistani-American journalist asked Modi a question regarding minorities' rights during the press conference with US President Joe Biden and Modi. 

Sabrina Siddiqui said that "many human rights groups" claimed that the Indian government discriminated against religious minorities and silenced critics. 

She asked what steps the Indian Prime Minister and his government were taking to improve the rights of minorities such as Muslims.

Modi responded that "In India's democratic values, there is absolutely no discrimination".

Following the press conference, Siddiqui has become a target of online abuse.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the White House condemned any "efforts of intimidation or harassment of a journalist". 

The Wall Street Journal also defended Siddiqui and condemned the harassment of Siddiqui. The SWJ described her as a "respected journalist" and added that she is known for her "unbiased reporting". 

The WSJ claimed that Siddiqui was being subjected to online trolling. They added that some of the online harassment came from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) politicians.
