A US-based mother draws a heart on her daughter’s hand every day before sending her to school. She tells her friends and teachers at school that she does it so that her daughter can look at the heart and have a physical reminder of her when she misses her. The daughter can then touch the heart and know that her mother would always be for her even if she couldn’t be with her.

The true reason, though, is gut-wrenching. It pauses your world for a moment and makes you empathise with how much the heart would mean for the mother and the child.

The mother, Emily Solberg, revealed that she initially didn’t feel the need to share it on social media. However, following the Uvalde school shooting in 2022, she shared the true reason behind drawing hearts on her daughter’s hand. On May 24, 2022, an 18-year-old former student of the school shot 19 students and two teachers to death and injured 17 others at Robb Elementary School, Texas.

The man, Salvador Ramos, had fatally shot his grandmother with an AR15 rifle before trespassing onto the school premises. He shut himself inside two adjoining classrooms before opening fire on the students and teachers. He was inside the school for over an hour before the United States Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) officers shot him to death.

Solberg shared that if her daughter ever "finds herself sitting against a wall in a dark room, hugging her to her chest with her blonde head bent in terror, while silent tears stream down her cheeks as her class waits for an armed gunman to try the door handle against a barricade of desks," she wanted her to know that she loved her.

She added that since the child wasn’t old enough to carry a phone to school yet, this was the only way she could say goodbye. She further said that she wondered how long it would be before the news cycle moved on this time, but mentioned that since she’s a mother in America, she cannot.
