The 27-year-old Matt Shaha began growing out his hair in 2020 for his mother, Melanie. He grew out his hair 12 inches before cutting it off and paying for a company to make a wig using the hair.

Melanie Shaha, the mother of six said, “When you wear a hat everywhere, you just stick out like a sore thumb. I don’t mind being sick, but I do very much mind that I look sick”. She had been battling the tumour on her pituitary gland since 2003.

Shaha said that even though the tumour was benign, it was at the wrong place and “smashes important things”. After her first diagnosis, she underwent neurosurgery. She underwent a second surgery after her tumour returned three years after the first surgery. The tumour returned for the third time in 2017, and she underwent radiation once again to keep the tumour from growing and eventually shrink the tumour.

However, there were lasting side effects to the treatments. Shaha said, “After three months of radiation, all my hair started to fall out, which I didn’t know would happen. And the doctor said it won’t come back.”

Her son, Matt Shaha decided to grow out his hair for his mother. He was unable to grow out his hair while he attended Brigham Young University due to the school’s dress and grooming standards. He could start growing out his hair in March 2020 as he finished his senior year from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two years later, in March 2022 he cut his hair. Shaha sent the hair to a small business in California. The business Compassionate Creations specialises in building custom wigs for people experiencing hair loss. In June, the wig made from Shaha’s hair was delivered and after four years, his mother was able to wear a wig that made her look like her old self.
