Redden was in court for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. The video footage, obtained by 8 News Now  Investigators, shows Redden leaping over the courtroom bench and assaulting Judge Holthus, prompting a chaotic struggle involving several individuals who managed to subdue him.

Before the attack, Redden's attorney had requested probation for his client. However, Judge Holthus expressed her disagreement, stating, "I think it's time he gets a taste of something else." This statement came after Redden had previously threatened harm to another individual in April, leading to a competency determination in May. Redden pleaded guilty in November, and a bench warrant was issued in December when he missed a court appearance.

The violent assault left Judge Holthus with a head injury, although she was reported to be in stable condition. A court marshal sustained a large gash to his forehead and was taken to the hospital, also listed in stable condition. The court praised the heroic efforts of staff, law enforcement, and others who subdued Redden, emphasising their commitment to courthouse safety.

Responses from the Legal Community

District Attorney Steve Wolfson commended those who came to the judge's aid, acknowledging the potentially worse outcome if not for their intervention. Democratic Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford extended well wishes to Judge Holthus and the injured marshal, applauding their dedication to justice.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the battery at the courthouse. The incident highlights the importance of courtroom security, with visitors typically screened for weapons and other illegal items before entering. Courthouses, despite security measures, occasionally face challenges, as seen in a previous case where a man was sentenced for assaulting a court security officer.

In response to the incident, the Eighth Judicial District Court reiterated its commitment to a safe and secure courthouse. The court is reviewing protocols to ensure the protection of the judiciary, the public, and court employees. Both Judge Holthus and Redden's attorney have not provided immediate comments.

Court Remains Committed to Safety

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks faced by judges, court personnel, and even attendees. Ensuring courtroom safety involves thorough security screenings, strict adherence to protocols, and continuous vigilance. Courthouses play a critical role in dispensing justice, and safeguarding these spaces is essential to maintaining the integrity of the legal system. The incident prompts a reevaluation of security measures to better protect the judiciary, the public, and court employees, emphasising the ongoing commitment to providing a safe environment for all involved in the pursuit of justice.
