The Oscar winner was awarded $1 after the jury found Terry Sanderson caused her harm in the 2016 ski collision.

Sanderson, a retired optometrist, sued Paltrow over lasting injuries he said he sustained when the two collided at the Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah more than seven years ago.

Jurors sided with Goop founder Paltrow, 50, who blamed Mr Sanderson for the accident and countersued for $1 plus legal fees.

Listening to the verdict in court, she was expressionless, staring straight ahead and appearing to nod slightly. She then walked out. As she left, she briefly stopped to speak to Sanderson. He later said she told him: "I wish you well." He replied: "Thank you, dear."

In an emailed statement, Paltrow said: “I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity. I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case.”

Reacting to the judgement Sanderson said it was a “real disappointment” at how he had been characterised during the trial. “It wasn’t just about the facts of the accident, was it?

“I listened to how I was characterised … it was a narrative about the life I’ve lived. They said things that were absolutely not true,” he added.

Sanderson, 76, had initially brought a claim for $3m against Paltrow, but that was knocked down to $300,000 before the trial began. Paltrow, who counter-sued, said she was being exploited for her wealth and celebrity.

Both Paltrow and Sanderson themselves testified during the trial, with the actress and retired doctor presenting opposing views of the collision.
