Elderly Women Adopts 11 year Old Dog
Johanna Carrington grew up in an orphanage in Germany at the time when the country grappled with war.  She grew up loving several pets and even adopted eight Pekingese dogs with her late husband over time. Carrington, who now lives in California, lost her dog Rocky sometime ago, and she felt her house to be quieter than usual and, lonely ever since. With the help of her daughter, a friend in a dog rescue organisation, a neighbour, and her caretaker who vouched to take the new dog on walks every day, Carrington has now adopted an 11-year-old dog to match her age in terms of seniority.

When Johanna Carrington expressed to her daughter, Debbie Carrington, that she wants to adopt a dog, Debbie was worried that a dog shelter may not permit a person as old as her mother to adopt one. However, with help from a friend who works at a dog rescue organisation in San Francisco, and a written agreement by Carringtont's caretaker, Eddie Martinez, to take the dog for all his walks and help in caregiving for him, Gucci finally made it to Carrington's home earlier this month. However, who made it possible for her was her neighbour Christine Falleti who contacted a senior dog rescue organisation on behalf of Carrington.

"He saw me sitting on my chair and jumped up on me, sat on my lap and made himself so comfortable. It didn't feel like it was his first time visiting the house. Gucci became our baby from that moment," she told a US-based publication.

"Animals bring so much happiness in our home"

Carrington, who turns 101 in December, is looking forward to celebrating her birthday in the company of her dog. Her reason to adopt an 11-year-old dog was both personal and medical. She wanted a quiet dog and senior dogs are usually quiet in nature. Carrington also wanted an aged dog because she is old, and felt that having a senior dog would help them get along.

According to Alice Ensor, an adoption coordinator at a Dog Rescue, senior citizens adopting senior-aged pets can prove to be a positive situation for both, the pets and the people adopting.

Carrington and Gucci now together make blanket nests at home and play around the yard, bringing a certain kind of energy back to the Carrington house. It's definitely heartwarming to see Johanna Carrington love and care for an aged dog and get that love back from the pet.
