In a tragic incident, a councillor was shot dead in Ecuador after attending a crucial meeting. The incident happened on Wednesday when she was recording a video about the poor conditions in the Guayas' Naranjal. The 29-year-old lawmaker, identified as Diana Carnero, was shot in the head by two men while riding on a bike. Read on to learn more about this incident.

As per the reports, the police said, "Two male suspects approached her on a motorcycle and shot her in the head before fleeing."

Part of a political violence

The councillor was immediately rushed to the hospital after she was shot. However, the doctors declared her dead on her arrival. 

The police have not made any arrests in this case till now and the investigation is going on to track down the accused. 

It is being said that Carnero's death is a part of the political violence going on in South America. President Daniel Noboa had recently declared a state of emergency across the nation due to the increase in the violence caused by organised crime groups. In fact, mobsters had warned that anyone seen outside after 11 pm would be executed.

Diana Carnero's sudden and tragic death has sent shockwaves across the nation. People are expressing their grief and condolences on social media platforms.

Former President Rafael Correa took to X and said, "Diana was 29 years old. This is a nightmare. When you have children of that age, you understand what their parents must be suffering. They cut short the life of a promise for Naranjal and the Homeland. What a disgrace!."  

Guayaquil deputy mayor Blanca Lopez also expressed grief on X and said, "This must end, wanting better days for our cantons, provinces and country cannot mean putting our lives at risk."
