Pronouns are a very personal topic for everyone and no one is entitled to explain to others why they want to change. And it is the responsibility of people around to acknowledge pronouns correctly. It is quite common to make an honest mistake with pronouns as the world is slowly learning about it, something that wasn't taught to us in childhood. But the respect for the person is what matters and that can not be compromised at any point.

In a Spout podcast recently, Lovato spoke about her pronouns and why she felt the need to change them again this time. She told the host of the podcast about why she felt the need to adopt her she/her pronouns this time, said "For me, I'm such a fluid person that ... I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy so that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said 'women' and 'men,' I didn't feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn't feel necessarily like a woman. I didn't feel like a man. I just felt like a human."

"That's what they/them is about for me. It's just about, like, feeling human at your core," she continues. Lovato further explains saying, "Recently, I've been feeling more feminine, and so I've adopted she/ her again. But I think what's important is, like, nobody's perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It's just all about respect."

Not every person has the freedom and comfort of being accepted for who they are by their loved ones. The world is learning but among the older generation and many others, it is still an alien thing to identify the gender they were not assigned at birth. So a public figure like Demi Lovato announcing her change of pronouns normalises it for many and becomes a huge representation for them.

Lovato herself said last year while changing her pronouns for the first time, "I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones."
