His joy is short-lived because of his landowner who demands his land back to build a factory. The performances of Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy make the struggles of the protagonists observable.

Indian auteur, Ritwik Ghatak, forever under-recognised, narrates the story of a young woman who desperately struggles to keep her family out of poverty in his fiercely moving masterpiece.

The Golden Thread

Indian director Ritwik Ghatak created this dramatic tale of a survival struggle of a young man and his determination to support his sister. The film is a part of Ghatak’s “Partition Trilogy” showing the height of his capabilities. Blending neo-realism and melodrama, the film exposes social prejudices while portraying the refugee crisis.

Kaagaz Ke Phool

Guru Dutt’s film is about the story of a film director, Suresh Sinha who discovers a star in Shanti, a woman he chanced upon one rainy evening. Casting her as the lead in his films, Shanti becomes a superstar while Suresh gets reduced to oblivion.

Mrinal Sen’s movie is one against violence and corruption. It is composed by four tales of renowned writers, each one having their unique styles and voices but at the same time, connected to perform powerful pieces of art.

Mrinal Sen’s film is the story of a lower-middle-class couple with one child, discovering that the house boy they had hired died of carbon monoxide poisoning at their home.

Masoom

A Shekhar Kapur film, Masoom is the story of DK’s family and his domestic life which turns upside-down on realising that he has a son of his previous affair who will now be the new guest at his home.

Salaam Bombay

Mira Nair’s film is the story of Krishna who ends up in the streets of Bombay’s “slums.” He befriends a drug dealer and tries to repay family debts at the same time. A film about hope and survival in the underbelly of Mumbai, the debut feature of a leading Indian-American filmmaker got her the Camera d’Or at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. 

The Emperors Of The Mughals

Set against the backdrop of the 16th century AD, K. Asif’s film tells the story of Prince Saleem who meets and falls for the beautiful court dancer, Anarkali much to his father’s disapproval. 

The Big City

Satyajit Ray’s Mahanagar set in the mid-1950s Calcutta follows the personal triumphs and frustrations of Arati who, despite her husband’s initial protests, takes a job to help support her family.
