Media channels are under the spotlight. The Mumbai Police has announced that some channels are rigging their TRPs and it included Republic TV in it. Police claimed the viewership was being illegally increased as per reports. The police said they have arrested owners of two such channels and have sent a notice to Republic TV.
The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), which measures TRPs, has installed over 2,000 barometers in Mumbai for measuring the data. The locations where these barometers are installed are confidential.
Priyanka Chaturvedi, a politician with Shiv Sena spoke in detail in the below interview about "creating stories out of hatred" and running an agenda "under your political bosses." Chaturvedi said these channels have made viewers follow false propaganda.
Republic TV is not alone, there are other channels like Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema. As per reports, and as indicated by the Republic TV statement, these TRPs are the ones linked to the coverage of Sushant Singh Rajput's death by suicide, the Rhea Chakraborty case and the build up on the same.
The police, in its conference, further said that ads earned by channels using these spiked TRPs will be considered as proceeds of crime.
Republic TV soon put out a statement, saying it will file criminal defamation case against the Mumbai Police Commissioner. “Republic will fight back, Republic will continue its investigation into the Sushant Singh Rajput case, the Palghar case and any other case,” the statement read.
Republic TV was quick to trend on Twitter with a large number of its followers coming out to support it.
