Black-clad women in the Sistan-Baluchestan province in Iran joined the nationwide protests. Human rights groups have described it as a “rare” move in the staunchly conservative region.

Videos showed dozens of women on the streets of the provincial capital Zahedan holding banners which read, “Woman, life, freedom”. The main slogan of the protest movement erupted in mid-September.

The videos showed the protesting women chanting, “Whether with hijab, whether without it, onwards to revolution”. Agence France-Presse (AFP) verified the videos posted on Twitter.

Mahsa Amini, the Irfromian woman of the Kurdish region passed away in the custody of the morality police. She was detained for allegedly wearing her headscarf too loosely, a breach of the Islamic republic’s dress code.

According to the non-government organisation (NGO) Iran Human Rights, at least 448 protesters were killed in the Iranian authorities’ clampdown against the protests.

The director for Iran Human Rights, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, spoke about the participation of women in the protests in Zahedan. He described it as “rare” and added that the ongoing protests were the “beginning of a revolution of dignity”.

According to Amir-Moghaddam, the Baluchi women are among the “most oppressed” in Iran. He added that the protests were the most organised so far since demonstrations broke out across the nation more than 2 months ago.

Large groups of men also took to the streets and chanted “we don’t want a child-killing government” according to the footage posted online by activists.

A video published by the Iran Human Rights showed security forces opening fire with birdshot and tear gas on male protesters in Taftan.

The NGO claims that at least 128 people have been killed in the protest crackdown in Sistan-Baluchestan, which gives it the largest death toll recorded in 26 of Iran's 31 provinces.

According to analysts, the protests in Sistan-Baluchistan began after Amini's death, but over time included other grievances.

Reportedly, the protests were triggered by the alleged rape of a 15-year-old in custody by a police commander in the province's city of Chabahar.
