Tennis legend Serena Williams was eliminated from the US Open 2022 after she lost the third round against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. Williams lost the match 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1.

Serena Williams lost what could be her final tournament as she had announced her plans to retire from tennis last month. Following the match that lasted three hours and four minutes, Williams addressed the crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Williams said to the crowd through tears, “Thank you so much, you guys were amazing. I tried.” She thanked her family and fans and gave special mention to her sister Venus. Williams said to the crowd, “She’s the only reason Serena Williams ever existed”.

Williams described her tennis career as, “the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever been on in my life”.

The tennis legend was asked whether she would ever reconsider her retirement, and she replied, “I don’t think so, but you never know. I don’t know”. Williams said that she wanted to explore a different version of herself and added, “I want to have a little bit of a life while I’m still walking”.

Williams bid farewell and said, “It’s been a long time. I’ve been playing tennis my whole life… It is a little soon, but I’m also happy because, I mean, this is what I wanted, what I want.”

Serena Williams lost against Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round match. Yomljanovic described the tennis legend as “the greatest of all time”. She said, “I’m feeling really sorry, just because I love Serena just as much as you guys do. And what she’s done for me, for the sport of tennis is incredible.”

Tomljanovic described her victory as a “surreal moment” and added that she thought that Williams would beat her. She added that she never thought she would get a chance to play against her in the final match when she was a child watching Williams play.

Williams had won against Danka Koviniv and Anett Kontaveit in the first two rounds of the US Open.
