Saoli Mitra was born in 1948 in West Bengal to Sombhu Mitra and Tripti Mitra who were also great theatre personalities. She was an only child and an actor, director, and playwriter.
She started an orphanage – Sanmati Bal Niketan Sanstha in Hadapsar area of Pune, on realising that there were many young children who needed care.
She was among the 119 recipients to receive the third-highest civilian honour on Tuesday. Out of the 119 awardees, 39 of them were women.

“I am very happy with the honour. I have faced many struggles and even threats to my life for the work I have been doing… The recognition is the blessing of those who have supported us,” said Birubala Rabha.
Padma Shri Awardee R Rangama owns 2.5 acres of land in Thekkampatti where she cultivates pulses, millets, and vegetables on the banks of the river Bhavani.
Sobha Naidu as per reports was suffering from neurological problems and was undergoing treatment for the same.
The Padma Shri winner has tutored 50,000 students in India and abroad in Madhubani art.
