The petition also claims that the marriageable age discrimination is a violation of fundamental rights of equality (Article 14), protection against discrimination (Article 15), and dignity of life (Article 21).

Even if the government increases the marriageable age, will they be able to curb the rates of female foeticide in India? Will merely increasing the marriageable age help parents understand that daughters aren’t a burden on the families?
The government needs to strengthen the execution of pre-existing laws of dowry, child marriage and rape and educate women so that they can exercise their legal rights.
