The Parliamentary Standing Committee is examining the Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill 2021 which proposes to raise the marriage age of women from 18 to 21 as a minimum age rule.

The Jaya Jaitley Committee has been opposed by members of parliament like Sushmita Deb and Priyanka Chaturvedi for having only one woman on board.

Turkey has withdrawn a bill which would have pardoned men who engaged in sex with underage girls, if they had married the victims. The bill had sparked widespread protests across the country and had been criticised globally.
