Assam’s Only Woman Chief Minister Syeda Anwara Taimur Passes Away

Among her many big milestones, In 1988, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha.  In 1991, she was appointed to the post of Minister for Agriculture in Assam.

Syeda Anwara Taimur death

Syeda Anwara Taimur, the first and only woman Chief Minister of Assam, passed away in Australia on Monday because of cardiac arrest. She was 84-year-old and was staying with her son in Australia for the past four years. She was suffering from health problems for a long time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned her death. He wrote on Twitter, “Condolences to the family and well-wishers of former Assam CM, Syeda Anwara Taimur Ji. Her contributions towards Assam’s development will be remembered. May her soul rest in peace.”

The current Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, said, "Saddened by the sudden demise of former Chief Minister of Assam, Syeda Anwara Taimur. Praying for the departed soul, I offer my heartfelt condolences to her family members and well-wishers."

Mahila Congress President and party spokesperson Sushmita Dev, said in a tweet, "Deeply saddened to know about the sudden demise of Assam`s first woman Chief Minister Smt Syeda Anwara Taimur ji. Syeda ji had a long public career serving the people of Assam for four terms as MLA. Prayers for the departed soul. My deepest condolences to friends and family."

Senior Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted “ A big loss for us all as former CM Syeda Anwara Taimur breathed her last. An able administrator and affable people’s person, Syeda Mam was the only woman CM of Assam. A 4-term MLA, she had an illustrious political career spanning over 4 decades. My prayers & condolences.”

About Syeda Anwara Taimur

Syeda Anwara Taimur was born on 24 November 1936. She graduated from Aligarh Muslim University in economics. Taimur was a lecturer in economics at Devicharan Barua Girls College, Jorhat in 1956.

She became an MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) in 1972 and then again in 1978, 1983, and 1991. She was a minister in Assam twice. Taimur became chief minister for a brief period from December 6, 1980, to June 30, 1981. 

In 1988, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha.  In 1991, she was appointed to the post of Minister for Agriculture in Assam. In 2011, she left the Congress and joined the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). In the history of Assam, she was the only female and Muslim Chief Minister of the state.
