India Mourns Death Of Nightingale Lata Mangeshkar

The Bharat Ratna awarded singer was admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital about 29 days ago due to some health complications caused by a COVID-19 infection.

"Naam gum jaega, chehra ye badal jaega, meri awaaz hi pehchaan hai, gar yaad rahe," My name will fade away, my face will change, my voice is my identity if it is remembered. The iconic lyrics of the song were sung by the Late singer Lata Mangeshkar in 1977. She passed away on February 6 at the age of 92 after a long battle with her health. In her absence today, it is her voice that will remain in the hearts of the people just like the lyrics of the 1977 song.

The Bharat Ratna awarded singer was admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital about 29 days ago due to some health complications caused by a COVID-19 infection. According to reports, her health had become stable in the past few days but on February 5, she was put back on ventilator support. After testing positive for COVID-19, the singer had also got pneumonia. She was popularly known as the 'Nightingale of India' and was bestowed with the highest state honours such as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan among others. The singer lived through many historic moments. She sang the patriotic song Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo in the presence of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, President Dr S Radhakrishnan in 1963 after the Sino-Indian war and Nehru's eyes welled up.

Mangeshkar was born to a musical family, to her parents Pandit Deenanth Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar in 1929. Her father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a well-known Marathi musician and theatre artiste, tutored her as a child and gave her roles in his plays.

Lata Mangeshkar Songs Will Stay On

The veteran singer's first song Hindi song Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu came out in 1943 film Marathi film Gajaabhaau. Mangeshkar then went on to become the voice of India by singing hundreds of iconic songs and collaborating with popular names as SD Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, Anil Biswas, Naushad Ali among others.

Apart from Hindi songs, Mangeshkar also gave her voice to many Bangali and Marathi songs. In fact, she sang more than 700 songs in her lifetime after starting her career at the age of 13. Tributes have been coming in from all quarters after her demise. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, tweeted, "I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people."

Mangeshkar will be given a state funeral and a public darshan will be held at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai at 6:30 pm. The state has also announced a two-day mourning period in the singer's name. The National flag will be flying at half-mast for two days as a mark of respect of the late singer.

The singer has left us her melodies to remember her by.
