Nat Sciver-Brunt became the first batter to score a century in the Women’s Premier League. Playing for the Mumbai Indians, she made an unbeaten 100 off 57 balls, taking Mumbai to 199 for 4 and setting up a 15-run win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 26. The WPL century fits neatly into a journey that has followed the same pattern throughout.

A Career Built on Control

Born in Tokyo in 1992, Sciver-Brunt grew up moving across countries due to her mother Julia’s diplomatic postings. Sport remained a constant through those transitions, though cricket was not an immediate choice. She played competitive football in Poland and basketball in the Netherlands, and even attended football trials with Chelsea.

When her education settled at Epsom College in Surrey, cricket became the constant thread. She played alongside future England teammate Alice Davidson and began to understand the game in a more structured way. Even then, there was no sense of inevitability about her rise. Women’s cricket at the time was underfunded and largely invisible.

Growth Through Change

Sciver-Brunt made her England debut in 2013 against Pakistan, the match was played at Louth Cricket Club in Lincolnshire.

Her rise was gradual. By 2015, she was touring with England’s Academy squad in Dubai. Two years later, she was central to England’s 2017 World Cup campaign, setting a record third-wicket partnership of 213 with Heather Knight and playing a key role in the title win at Lord’s. The following year, she was named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year.

Consistency Across Formats

Since then, Sciver-Brunt has been a constant presence in England’s middle order across formats. Her WPL season has followed the same pattern. In 2025, she became the first player to score more than 500 runs in a single edition of the league, finishing with 523 runs for the Mumbai Indians.

The century against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru stood out as a logical outcome of a disciplined form. Her individual honours include multiple Walter Lawrence Awards and PCA Women’s Player of the Year titles.

The century was not a one-off moment. It was another example of how, when England has needed control, Sciver-Brunt has provided it.
