At the 68th National Awards, Sumi, the debut Marathi film of Sanjeev K. Jha, took home two awards in two categories. The child actors in the movie, Akanksha Pingale and Divyesh Indulkar, shared the Best Child Artist award, which was supposed to go to Best Children's Film.

In the drama Sumi, which is set in rural India, Akanksha plays the destitute 12-year-old Sumati and tells the tale of her struggle, ambition, devotion and friendship. The narrative of Sumi is about daughters' and mothers' intransigence. Sharing his delight in the film's success, the director said, “I am very happy to get such recognition for the first time. National film awards are prestigious and dream come true. ‘Sumi’ was a heart-touching story and it needed to be told." Adding, "It is about a girl and her quest to get a bicycle so she can fly and achieve her dream to get educated. We are thankful to the jury who decided to give the best children’s film award. That will encourage me to make such films. Really, really happy.”

Who Is Akanksha Pingale

Pingale made her debut with the 2017 movie Narya. The award for the Best Child Actor consists of Rajat Kamal and a cash prize of Rs 50,000. Akanksha Pingle hails from Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune in Maharashtra. Her father works a private job and mother is a housewife. There has been celebration all around her neighbourhood since the prize announcement was made.

The movie director Jha also expressed his gratitude for all the support and well wishes his crew has received from all over. He will be inspired to tell even more gripping tales that have an impact on people's lives and society as a whole by receiving this national award. His debut Marathi movie, Sumi, holds a special place in his heart. The movie, which is almost about his childhood, is about the bravery and dreams that every girl in the county demonstrates. Despite being a dramatic movie, it also discusses the education of girls. He expressed gratitude to the entire jury for bestowing the honourable medal. He said that good stories find their way and touch everyone's heart.

The State Film Awards 2021, which were announced on Friday, recognised Sneha Anu, 15, from the densely packed Rajaji Nagar colony in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, with the Best Child Artist (Female) honour earlier this month. She received praise for the riveting role of Mullu in the Khais Millen film Thala, which she also wrote and directed.
