Simone Ashley in Bridgerton 2: Bridgerton, one of the most successful series on Netflix, is coming back with a second season and Sex Education star Simone Ashley has landed a lead role on it. Ashley will play a major role in this adaptation of Julia Quinn's romance novel.
Ashley will play Kate Sharma (known as Kate Sheffield in the books) who has "newly arrived in London," and is a "smart, headstrong young woman who suffers no fools — Anthony Bridgerton very much included." She would be romancing the eldest Bridgerton brother, Anthony (played by Jonathan Bailey). Her character's name has been altered to reflect her South-Asian background.
"The show was always set out to be primarily one book per season," showrunner Chris Van Dusen had previously told EW. According to Netflix, Season 2 will follow the second novel in the Bridgerton series, The Viscount Who Loved Me.
The official Bridgerton account, tweeted: "Quite the juicy bit of gossip, dear readers... This author is certainly looking forward to many a column covering Miss Kate Sharma."
Julia Quinn is excited about the casting
"I couldn’t dream of a more perfect Kate. I mean, just LOOK at her expression in that first photo!" the author wrote on Instagram.
25-year-old Ashley plays Olivia in Sex Education, another popular series on Netflix. She also appeared in The Sister, A Working Mom’s Nightmare, Casualty, Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Broadchurch.
The news certainly made an impact on Bridgerton fans who cheered for a South Asian casting choice.
