Pearl is named after Pearl Finkelstein, the aunt of her father. She was born in New Orleans, one of several locations her parents visited as itinerant photographers while touring with a theatrical troupe, but for a variety of reasons, her parents told their families and Pearl that she was actually born in another city.

Despite the fact that she was born in Indiana, her parents did not stay for a long time. Pittsburgh is where Pearl was raised. Just before turning 20 years old, she relocated to Los Angeles with her parents.

She joined Temple Israel in 1937 and still occasionally goes to services there, generally during the High Holy Days. On December 16, 1931, she married Mark Berg, with whom she had two children: Alan and Robert. Berg continued to maintain a social life for herself after her husband passed away in 1989 by becoming more active in a bridge group, joining a book club, and going to plays and concerts frequently. She was a member of Temple Israel's Sisterhood and was instructed to write letters to grieving families on the temple's behalf. She kept doing this until she was 105 years old.

Berg has caretakers with her around the clock even though she currently resides in her own house in the Los Feliz district of Los Angeles, California.
