Who Is Juli A. Mathew? Indian-American Woman Takes Oath As Texas County Judge

Juli A. Mathew, an Indian-American democrat has been re-elected for the second term as Texas County Judge in the United States after defeating her Republican Challenger Andrew Dornburg with 123,116 votes. She will now serve as presiding judge for a period of four years.

Juli A. Mathew, an Indian-American democrat has been re-elected for the second term as Texas County Judge in the United States after defeating her Republican Challenger Andrew Dornburg with 123,116 votes. She will now serve as presiding judge for a period of four years.

Juli is a native of Thiruvalla from the state of Kerala in India, who took the oath via videoconferencing from her husband's village house in Kasaragod, a district in the northernmost part of Kerala. She will continue to serve as presiding judge for No. 3 of the Fort Bend County Court in Texas. Mathew was voted the administrative judge for the County Courts by her fellow mates.

Juli A. Mathew came forward to thank everyone after winning the election, via a Facebook post.

"Thank you! I am truly grateful to have been selected to serve the citizens of Fort Bend County for one more term. I'm grateful for every supporter, prayer warrior, and voter during this journey. There were many personal and public trials and oppositions, but I trust that God has placed me in the right place at the right time. I'm humbled to continue to serve my fellow residents", said Juli Mathew via a Facebook post after she won the election.

Who Is Juli A. Mathew?

  • Mathew is a native of Thiruvalla, Kerala, but she migrated to the US with her parents at a very young age for which she discontinued her studies at Village school in Kerala when she was in 5th grade.
  • She never wanted to be an advocate or lawyer, but as her father faced some legal issues with his business, it made her inclined towards pursuing legal studies.
  • Her parents discouraged her to pursue legal studies as according to them, It was a field full of stress but still, she chose law.
  • She finished high school in Philadelphia and attended Penn State University before she joined Delaware Law School for her Juris Doctorate. She  studied at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands as well.
  • Juli was the president of the Student Government Association when she was at Penn State Abington and got a citation for leadership from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
  • Mathew is married to Jimmy Mathew a native of Bheemanady in Kasaragod, Kerala. She is the mother to 3 daughters.
  • She was the Associate Municipal Judge in Arcola, Texas, and a practising attorney for 15 years with experience in mass tort, civil litigation, probate, and criminal matters in Fort Bend and other countries surrounding it.
  • She is also the head of the first Juvenile Intervention and Mental Health Court.
  • Mathew created history by being the first Indian-American woman to be elected to a judge's bench in Texas.
