Bilquis Edhi Passes Away, Here's What She Would Be Remembered For

Bilquis Edhi was a revered Pakistani philanthropist who passed away at the age of 74. She is known to have worked alongside her husband late Abdul Sattar Edhi as the two founded the Abdul Sattar Edhi Foundation, a welfare organisation that worked towards humanitarian causes in many fields.

Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away in 2016 after which his wife Bilquis took over and worked for the organisation to the best of her abilities along with her son Faisal Edhi. Faisal Edhi mentioned that his mother's blood pressure dropped massively earlier this week and she was admitted to the hospital. He further mentioned that his mother suffered complications and had congestive heart failure. His mother had already undergone bypass surgery twice before. According to the Foundation spokesperson, Edhi had fallen ill a month ago.

Pakistan President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, both expressed their grief over her death and extended their condolences towards the family. The President House mentioned in a tweet, "She had always been shoulder to shoulder with Abdul Sattar Edhi in his philanthropic efforts and continued his work even after his death. May Allah bless the departed soul."

The Prime Minister also tweeted, "An incredible woman in her own right, she stood by Edhi sahab like a rock and together they set up an example of human compassion and ran one of the largest philanthropic organisations of the world. May her soul rest in peace!"

Bilquis Edhi achievements

Bilquis Edhi passed away at 74, yet her works and vision will remain forever with us. The woman spent more than six decades serving the cause of humanity. She started the initiative of taking up unwanted children across the country of Pakistan so that they were not left abandoned by their families or parents. Recognised as the "Mother Of Pakistan", Bilquis Edhi received many international and national accolades for her humanitarian work including Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the Lenin Peace Prize, Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice in 2015, and the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1986.

Edhi was also named as the "Person of the Decade" along with human rights Professor Prof. Yanghee Lee and US ethicist Stephen Soldz back in 2021 by the United Nations.
